This past weekend I had the chance to go to Hillwood, which is the estate that the heiress to the Post cereal fortune, Marjorie Merriweather Post, lived in and later turned into a museum with beautiful surrounding gardens. Currently, there is an exhibit on display called "Wedding Belles" that showcases the gowns and other wedding apparel that Marjorie, along with her daughters, wore in their various weddings during the 20th century.

Marjorie and her daughters were busy ladies, and were married at LEAST three times... one was married six times...!! Check out the link to the website if you're interested in viewing the collection: http://www.hillwoodmuseum.org/exhibitions/WeddingBelles/Exhib.html. It's a short self-guided tour that lasts about 30 minutes at most, but you pay to see the entire estate and gardens, which are totally worth seeing. Regardless, the gowns and fashion are timeless, and I had a blast seeing wedding gowns made of velvet with a fox fur trim (I'm not kidding)! Oh, and the gift shop is legit -- affordable, and had some really great ideas for wedding-related purposes (bachelorette parties, engagement, wedding, etc)!
Alright, on to the present... obviously DC has some great places to find wedding dresses, but I want to mention one shop located in the heart of Georgetown that always has some eye candy featured in the window. The store is called Hitched, and while I've admittedly never actually been inside, I can confidently say that the majority of the dresses that are (changed on a daily basis) featured in the window are 100% a-mazing. Whether you're looking for wild and crazy, or sweet and conservative (ah-hem Princess Catherine-esque), Hitched has the style you're looking for. Check it out -- you don't have to be the bride to appreciate the styles!
Which do you prefer... wild and crazy, or sweet and conservative?? |
